(SLOW33) Taking a walk after dark in Denver’s Capitol Hill neighborhood now means putting your life in danger. After yet another brutal attack and robbery, what are the City of Denver and the Denver Police Department doing to protect the residents of Capitol Hill?
24-year-old Denver student and model Andy Greschler was violently attacked and robbed while walking home Friday night on Pearl Street between 11th and 12th.
The crime wave that began this past summer is continuing with seemingly no end in sight. Just like previous Capitol Hill assaults, Greschler was quickly and violently struck by his attacker with a blunt object and robbed while he lay unconscious on the sidewalk.
The University of Colorado Denver student will spend weeks in recovery and undergo plastic surgery to repair a broken cheek bone.
An endless supply of police seem to be available to patrol Occupy Denver protests and arrest drunk frat boys at LoDo sports bars while law-abiding citizens of Capitol Hill are forced to fend for themselves on increasingly dangerous streets.
SLOW33 wants our readers who live in Capitol Hill to change your habits.
1. DO NOT WALK HOME AFTER DARK.
Seriously. These attacks are random and unpredictable. Capitol Hill is simply not a safe neighborhood after dark anymore.
2. BUDGET ENOUGH MONEY TO TAKE TAXIS HOME FROM BARS.
If you cannot afford a taxi, ask a friend for a ride or stay on their couch until morning.
3. EVERYONE IS A TARGET.
Victims include gays, straights, men, women, and even groups.

This really hurt my heart when I found out about this!!! I hope Andy has a speedy and full recovery!!! I’m glad that Paul and Dave are bringing awareness to the peeps in Cap Hill…lemme know what I can do to help!! xoxoxoxo James
“Capitol Hill is simply not a safe neighborhood after dark anymore.” – I think you’re exaggerating a bit there. Capitol Hill is still a very safe neighborhood, despite these attacks. These are rare occurances, and hard to pin down the perps (since they knock you out before robbing you, so you can’t identify them). Yes, extra precaution is a good idea, but Capitol Hill is still generally safe.
Highly recommend keeping your cell phone charged, linked to a GPS tracking app, and not to fight back… give them what they want, even your phone!!! Your GPS could be a key factor in catching some of these jerks!!!
I think this is still a very important story. Yes, violent crime is on the rise in Capital Hill area, as it may be in other one’s too. I agree if those cops who show up armed, looking for and causing riot conditions, would concentrate on law enforcement instead, these incidents may decrease. Thanks Dave for the article and Paul for the photos.
Personally I’m just not interested in hiding at home in fear. What we need is *more* people walking around at night, not fewer.
Maybe if less Denver cops were focusing on suppressing freedom of assembly with Occupy Denver, there’d be more cops available to patrol these areas.
Priorities, Mayor Hancock… Priorities.
